Warning signs to watch for
While every situation is different, you may want to exercise additional caution if you encounter any of the following:
- Requests for sensitive information, such as your Social Security number, bank account information, credit card details, passwords, or other personal documents early in the process
- Requests to pay for training, application processing, equipment, or any other fees
- A job offer without an interview or after very little communication
- Poorly written communications, vague job descriptions, or inconsistent company information
- Emails sent from addresses that don't appear to belong to the company or use misspelled domain names
These are examples of potential warning signs only. They are not an exhaustive list and should not be considered legal, security, or fraud prevention advice.
